| Non-playing Captain, Martin Hewson, opened the
batting with Dave Males at Redlands this evening as
Portland Red Triangle started their 2002 Evening League
campaign. The pair started slowly as the Civil Service's
opening bowlers, containing a certain ex-PRT 1st-teamer,
Gordon "Smokey" McCombe, tied down the Triangle
batsman. It was in the third over that McCombe struck as
he bowled a devilish outswinger to Males, found the edge
and was held by the waiting keeper. By divine
inspiration, Bill Gates came to the crease, and was
immediately under attack from McCombe as he was unable to
get bat on ball as the new ball kept swinging. He
relieved the pressure by scrambling a single, and his
captain showed the way by hitting Gordon for four with a
lofted drive. Gates' suffering didn't continue for much
longer as Carvell granted him salvation and he was bowled
after a hitting a well-below par, for him, 2. Hewson's new signing, Didi Trevelyan, looked unconvincing during his brief stint in bat and was caught off that man Carvell for just a single. Evening League specialist, Grant "Stumpy" Neven was strangely subdued during his innings and played an missed several times before Carvell put the man out of his misery by removing his middle stump for 2. Jones then came to bat, not renowned for his quick-scoring, and so it proved as he laboured towards his 10, the highlight of his knock being a deft reverse sweep that he guided fine of third man, and his only shot off the square. After trying to run out his captain the previous over with a very close single, Jones tried to turn an easy one into two, but was run out by a direct hit and dived over the line but to no avail, as he was short by a country mile. He finally left the pitch after lying on the outfield, gasping for breath, not realising that he hadn't made it. Meanwhile, one man was fighting his own battle against the bowlers, and coming out on top, as Hewson smashed his way to 37. He was joined by Trevett, who had meandered out to the middle, still showing the after effects of a chronic bout of flu. Apperances were deceiving as he hit a boundary off his 4th delivery, and looked like forming an effective partnership with the skip. This was not to be, as Martin tried one time too many to hit over the infielders and was caught. Gates' friend, and PRT debutant, Tom "Billy Bunter" Scott, then came out and then went back straight away as he attempted an audacious slog-sweep off his first ball and the bails went flying. Hard-hitting Richard Stewkesbury, then entered the fray, and he too exited immediately as Bill Gates (now umpiring) fired him out LBW, though he complained he had been hit on the thigh. "Sicknote" Cole then survived the hattrick ball to go on to score 3*, and help Trevett (21*) guide PRT to 89 after the 16 allocated overs. Hewson opened the bowling with Trevett and Morris, a decision that would prove a matchwinner, as the pair took 3 apiece for only 38 runs in the first 10 overs. Morris removed the opener with a fortuitous top-edge off a ball down the legside, caught by Trevett at square leg, following this up with another catch being held by a stunned Cole, of all people, then bowling the tricky left-hander in the middle order. Trevett proved the more accurate of the attack as he bowled two of his victims and trapping the other LBW. Didi then came on for Trevett, and picked up 2 wickets one with a fantastic diving catch by Dave Males. At the other end Jones replaced Morris, and then was replaced by Hewson the following over, disgusted with the quality of 3-Seats' brief spell. The Captain then picked up a wicket, only after his first ball was smashed for four. The final wicket went as the Civil Service desparately tried to reach the total but were run out for a final score of 61, giving PRT the victory by a comfortable 28 runs. |
