| The sun shone and
there was barely a cloud in the sky as Neven's Saturday 2nd
XI started their Division 6 campaign at Reforne. PRT took
to the field after losing the toss, though the Captain
was intending to put the opposition in anyway, as they
had only turned up with 9 players. The pitch was not at
its best with an ample covering of grass and very low
bounce due to the amount of moisture in the ground - a
pudding of a pitch. Polley and Males took the new ball with Scott starting the match bowling up the hill. Neven had set an attacking field, with a ring of fielders round the opening pair, 2 slips and only one man on the boundary. Sherborne got off to a steady start in the first two overs, pushing a couple of singles then young Pentolfe hit out over the circle but only earned two as the damp field aided the fielders. In the third over, with Males getting some bounce off the wicket, Pentolfe tried to run a quick single after pushing the ball towards Morris. But, unlike the previous Males over when he got away with it, this time the Captain had moved his fielder in and he pounced to run out Pentolfe's partner, after sharp glove-work from Neven. Wickets then fell rapidly as Snott dismissed Pentolfe with the worst ball he bowled the whole afternoon, a rank full toss. Polley picked up three victims, all clean bowled (mostly deceived by the lack of bounce down the slope), and should have added a fourth if only John Baxter could have held on to one of the softest slip catches we'll probably see all season. Males then finished off his spell with his third wicket and then made way for the off break of Joseph Trevett. Making his return to PRT cricket after only a handful of appearances last season, Jo somehow bowled 2 successive maidens, riddled with full tosses. Polley made way for Tom "Sicknote" Cole to mop up the tail, which he duly did in bizarre circumstances. As he ran into bowl, noticeably struggling with his run-up, a cry of "Oh no!" was heard, but he continued with the delivery and cleaned up the bemused batsman to end the Sherborne innings after only 13.1 overs. It was decided that tea should be taken after the match had finished, so it was just left to Trevett and Bill Gates to knock off the 33 runs needed in just over 4 overs to secure the victory and the precious 20 points. |
