| A sun-kissed Reforne was the setting for this
encounter between Portland Red Triangle and The Dorothy
Inn. Triangle were looking to maintain their 100% record
in Division 2, and after tonight's victory, promotion to
the top table of Weymouth Evening League Cricket is
assured. With their inspirational Captain, Graham Elenor,
absent due to greyhound racing commitments, it fell upon
the broad shoulders of Saturday 2nd XI's equally
inspirational skipper, Grant Neven to lead PRT. Late
additions to the team were Will Halliday, on a visit from
the capital and Jason Mulsow, flown in from sunny
California. The Dorothy opened up the innings with Triangle 2nd's very own Mark Knott, who looked to attack the opening pair of Scott Males and Trevett from the off. Males was unlucky not to pick up the wicket of Knott after he mis-hit a drive straight to mid-off, but alas father Males spilled the catch. Trevett didn't have much luck at his end as Knott carved away boundaries through point, when the ball wasn't beating both the bat and stumps. It was Scott who eventually made the breakthrough as Knott was on his way after Dave Males made sure of the catch this time, avoiding a family crisis. The other opener defied the home side's bowling as he saw his team fall around him, as Trevett ended his unlucky 5 over spell wicketless. Neven turned to Will Halliday, to replace Males up the hill and his height immediately extracted some bounce from the wicket, causing the Dorothy's batsman to take evasive action, in what was to be a fiery spell. Richard Stewkesbury got the nod to take over from Trevett, and his first ball removed the dogged opener, as he tried to give the Duke the charge, but ended up being bowled middle stump, beguiled by the flight. Stewkesbury then produced another wicket in the over, and the switch to spin looked like a masterstroke by the stand-in Captain. At the other end, Halliday continued to bully the opposition batsmen and was rewarded with a wicket and could have had a second if Dave Males hadn't dropped another catch, but the real action was occurring down the hill as Stewkesbury continued to mystify with a bewitching combination of flight and guile, as the wickets kept flowing. The visitors had no answers to the crafty leg spinner as he picked up his 5th wicket of the day and was looking virtually unplayable, though some were suggesting that he had tried to avoid this feat for the fear of buying the subsequent jug of ale after the game. The final wicket fell with the score on a decidedly average 67, that man Stewkesbury claiming the run out after some nifty footwork deflected the ball onto the stumps to end the innings and an inspired performance. With only 68 needed for the victory, Neven sent out Dave Males with Will Halliday, though this partnership didn't really have time to flourish as Dave was bowled for a duck by Polley, older brother of Triangle 2nd's Sam. Kev Dodson, in a rare appearance for any Triangle team this season due to work commitments, came to the middle and looked like he had hardly been away as he set about getting the required runs. The runs flowed freely off both bats as the Dorothy's heads dropped and a decisive 6 from Halliday all but sealed the win. It was left to Dodson, who faced Polley's 3 best balls of his spell in his last over, to hook a no-ball for the clinching runs as Neven's men wrapped up a decisive 9-wicket win. |
