On a glorious May afternoon, Portland Red Triangle put Saturday's worries behind them, and gave Ibberton a sound thrashing. Sunday Captain, Graham Elenor, won the toss, and duly decided to bat against the 9 men.

Dave Males opened with Jan Davey, who looked decidedly the worse for wear after a hard night out on the Portland tiles. This proved to be a deceptive facade, as "Brains" took the Ibberton attack apart in a display of decisive slogging. In an innings where he racked up 16 fours and 6 sixes, Davey looked a shadow of the man who had fallen so meekly the day before, and sent out a message to the Weymouth bowlers for next Saturday's crunch tie. At the other end, Dave Males was steadiness personified, as he calmly stroked the ball the around the field and was unlucky for his innings to be cut short by a careless shot that was well held by the Ibberton captain.

The prodigal son, Ben Doidge, came to the middle, woefully short of both confidence and runs this season. But a fine knock of 72, which contained some sublime cover drives mixed with some blistering pull shots, booked him a spot in the Saturday 1st XI's batting line-up to face Weymouth's pacey South African, Abrahams, on 18th May. As the pair blasted their way past the 250 run barrier, Doidge was first to fall as he scooped an easy catch and left still unsure if he had reached his fifty, after being duped by umpire, John Ryan, that the applause for him was actually the team clapping the 200.

Jones, who had been run out for a duck the previous day, followed that up with Davey running him out without facing a ball, though Jones did himself no favours by failing to respond to the call for a good 3 seconds. His frustration was evident as he hit the ball back to JR (still umpiring), then left the field of play with his teammates howling with laughter outside the pavilion.

Ray "Raymondo" Charlton, tipped as a future legend, joined Davey as he was nearing his 150, and showed some of the old magic as he stroked the ball for a couple of boundaries. At the other end Davey was undone, when he tried to hit another huge six over the bowler's head, but instead was cleaned up, for 153, one agonising run short of equaling his highest score. Grant Neven, author of the popular Neville's Notes column, had a cameo role as he was out after only a few overs, but showed he still has what it takes with a crushing pull-shot for 4. Captain Elenor, sent out the promising bowler, Sam Polley and he shared a short partnership with Charlton, before the senior pro was bowled in the final over. Morris joined Polley for the final few deliveries, and scrambled a quick single, then hooked a shoulder-high full toss for 4 off the last ball of the innings, though it really should have been called a no-ball. PRT finished on the imposing total of 324/4, and with the Captain in such fine form with the ball (last week he claimed 3 for 11 in a fantastic spell against Suttoners), the result looked a certainty.

After tea, Elenor chose to open the bowling with Morris and Polley, and in the 3rd over Morris struck, bowling the opener in what was to be the highlight of his stint with the ball, as he then lost his line completely finishing with figures of 1-37. Polley bowled well down the hill, and was unfortunate not to pick up any scalps, but then let himself down in his final over and was hit for successive fours after a sequence of 3 wides.

By this time, the skipper had had enough and brought himself on. The self-titled "Mr. Economical", bowled a quite magnificent 4 overs, and picked up a wicket, caught & bowled, finishing on 1/1. The hero of the hour was Richard Stewkesbury, who beguiled the Ibberton batsman with his airy leg spin, and claimed career-best figures of 5/16, with Neven picking up 3 stumpings. In the middle of this, the Duke had the chance of a rare hattrick, but Ben Doidge (who is not the player his father was, and he was superb), couldn't get close to the ball as it ballooned off the bat, and the chance was gone.

With the job seemingly done, Elenor took himself off at the George Inn end, after a 4 overs of near perfection, and allowed one-time 2nd XI Captain, Jones a chance to redeem himself for his performance with the bat. Against the no.3 bat, Jones showed good pace, for him, and bowled a decent line and length, but once Ibberton's young tailender came to bat, he became intimidated and chose to bowl a tribute to Stewkesbury's leg breaks. The young lad relished these full tosses and hooked one for four, sending Stewkesbury scurrying along the boundary to no avail. It was left to Stewkesbury himself to mop up the final wicket, and wrap up a very convincing victory for Triangle.
