The sun shone from behind the clouds on a surprisingly dry day in July, as Portland Red Triangle put last week's hiccup against Sherborne III behind them and thrashed an under-strength Wayfarers II side to gain 20 easy points. With the 1st XI's fixture against Hamworthy called off, Club Captain Graham Elenor, sent Bill Trevett and John Ryan down to the 2nd's for what proved to be a gentle workout. Luke Heritage and Michael Males were added to the team as Timothy "Rupert" Waight was absent due to family commitments and Daniel Jones was beginning his suspension for the rest of the season. On one of the best pitches prepared at Triangle this season, and certainly a contender for the driest, 9-man Wayfarers won the toss and chose to bat.

Wayfarers sent out a right/left hand combination to open the batting and immediately were looking to survive against Triangle's new-ball pair, Sam Polley and Bill Trevett. Neven had set an attacking field, with a very safe leg side circle, and a 2-man slip cordon. Both bowlers kept it tight in the opening exchanges with Trevett making best use of coming up the hill moving the ball off the seam and also benefited from the continual encouragement and advise from his vocal brother, making another of his rare appearances this season. It was Trevett who struck first, removing the right hander with a ball that clipped the top of the off stump bail, leaving the batsman bewildered.

The visitor's captain, and last recognised batsman was in next, providing the bowlers with a new test of bowling to dual lefties. Neither Polley or Trevett were unable to make a breakthrough against this new pairing, as the opener continued looking to pull any ball on the legside while the captain was aiming to smash everything out of the ground, though with limited success. Polley ended his spell unfortunate not to take a wicket, giving way to John "Long Hop" Ryan, while Trevett passed the baton onto the young pretender, Scott Males. This change worked immediately as Ryan took two wickets in two balls, first removing the captain who missed a straight one, then his young replacement who again missed Ryan's nagging line aimed at middle stump, though had a nice flourish to his attempted forward defensive before he was too returned to the pavilion.

With a hattrick begging, Neven moved the field in, crowding the new bat, but alas Poindexter's delivery went wide of off stump, but not put off by this, he removed the newcomer with the final ball of the over, once again removing middle stump. Males could not replicate John's impressive opening over, but asked a lot of questions of the batsman, as attention turned once again to the big man. Ryan delivered once again, removing his man with the first ball of the over, and this time completing the job, dismissing the next man to claim his hattrick and bringing another left hander, dubbed "Little Master" by one fielder. Not intimidated by his foe, the young lad managed to defend his wicket, even having the audacity to hit out, and reaping the rewards with a boundary through mid on.

Scott decided to get in on the act and produced the moment of the match as he finally removed the opener, aided by some sharp fielding by his brother. Up to this point, Michael had had an uneventful afternoon, and was puffing away on another well-rolled cigarette without a care in the world, as he fielded at square leg. Seeing the left-hander pull a shorter delivery to the legside, Michael dropped his half-smoked cigarette to the ground, dived to his right and held a smart one-handed catch, before throwing the ball back and started to roll a well earned fag. Scott then went on to claim his second wicket and ended the Wayfarers' innings on a very disappointing 66.

After a short break for orange squash, Neven sent out the reliable duo of John Baxter and Bill Gates. In an uneventful 11.4 overs, with only one lbw appealed for and turned down, the pair were untroubled as they calmly notched up the required runs. John Baxter was efficiency personified as he punished the bad ball as the bowlers continued to pitch it down his favoured legside. John was more fortunate than Gates, who took the brunt of Wayfarers' frustration as he became a moving target, hit twice in the chest and caught a full toss square in the box. It was a useful knock for Gates, who had been riddled with self-doubt the week before and was on the verge of given up the game, but responded to his Captain's challenge to open again, and hit the winning runs with aplomb.
