The sun was shining and a gale was blowing as Triangle took on YOI in the Portland derby, in tonight's second division clash. Rain had threatened to cancel the game, but the high winds had dried out the pitch enough for it to be playable, if still a little damp. Non-playing Captain, Martin Hewson won an aggressive toss (nearly taking ex-PRT player, Dana Milverton's eye out with the coin) and elected to bat.

Opening with Dave Males, Hewson hit the first delivery for 4, and went on to make a steady 17 (though he counted 21 runs off his bat). His partner, the ever-reliable Males, was calmly grinding out a knock of 47. Hewson fell to the YOI's portly, yet wily, assassin, claiming afterwards it was one of the finest ball's he'd ever faced. He had tormented the Captain by continually experimenting with varied flight and lines of attack, as well as devastating movement in the air and off the wicket. Bill Gates, Triangle's hero against the Post Office, was Males' new partner and hit a sprightly 17 runs, before falling to a ball from Brian that kept low.

Didi Trevelyan, one of the Captain's new signings for the season, and yet to find his feet in the batting line up, once again had a torrid time at the crease, doing little to improve his average with another single. Grant Neven, still flush with success after leading his 2nd XI team to victory over Shillingstone on Saturday, looked the part as he played a flamboyant drive, edging the ball through first slip for four. The next ball was a different kettle of fish as his middle stump was uprooted by a snorter of a delivery, and he was back in the pavilion. In next was the Dorset Echo's new tourism correspondent, Graham Elenor, barely recovered from his escapades in Tunisia, and ran well with Males, but was picked up for not grounding his bat behind the crease, losing the team runs, before he fell for a duck, caught playing his only attacking stroke.

Richard Stewkesbury, departing on a Canadian Odyssey at the end of the week, was there to see the end of Males, who in sight of his half century, top-edged an attempted pull shot and was caught by Milverton behind the stumps. Luckily the Duke had crossed while the ball was hanging in the air, and was up to face the final ball of the innings, joined by Trevett wearing only one pad. He duly crashed the ball with a beautifully timed cover drive, and scampered 2 as the innings closed on 99.

Hewson chose to open the bowling with Morris down the hill, and Kritchard. Both bowlers were unable to make any impression on the openers, as the YOI scored freely as they moved onto 50 after only six overs. Knowing at this rate Triangle would lose their 100% record, the Captain turned to the unpredictable Jones. Starting off his long run, Jones proved to be as ineffective as the openers, but luckily the other change bowler, Trevett, was looking threatening coming up the slope. Things changed once Jones, trying to bowl the ball straight against the viscious cross-wind, reduced his run-up to just four paces.

This proved to be the turning point of the match, as the Big Smoke ripped through the YOI top-order, picking up four wickets in a sublime spell of controlled slow-medium bowling. Establishing himself as a partnership breaker, Jones claimed the vital wickets of the openers, both bowled middle stump. At the other end, Trevett was providing able back-up as he too picked up a wicket, but this paled into comparison as Jones struck twice more, as Neven took a sharp catch to dismiss Milverton as he chased a very wide delivery, before once again another victim saw his guard breached as the bails fell. Trevett could have had a second if only Males, usually a safe bet in normal conditions, had held onto a catch that had been hit high into the swirling winds.

Jones then had the opportunity in his final over to claim a five wicket haul, and buy a well-deserved jug of ale, when he let a potential caught and bowled, slip through his hands. By that time the YOI had fallen behind the required rate and finished 13 runs short of victory, thanks to one man.
