Nationwide Sun Alliance Dorset Cricket League Division 7
Suttoners vs. Portland Red Triangle
Kinson Manor, Bournemouth
5th May 2002

Result: Portland Red Triangle(19 points) beat Suttoners (4 points) by 6 wickets
Toss: Portland Red Triangle
Umpires: Various
Man of the Match: G Elenor

After a somewhat roundabout journey, Red Triangle arrived to face a team who had beaten them in contentious circumstances in the final game of last season, fearing further confrontation in the glorious sunshine. On winning the toss, captain Graham Elenor, who later took 3 for 11, decided to field as two of his players, the oddly titled Trevett brothers had a Robert Zimmerman concert to attend in Bournemouth. Bill Trevett still recovering from a bout of 'flu, took the new ball and bowled a steady line though without looking particularly penetrating, whilst at the other end John Ryan shared the honours. Ryan made the first breakthrough, bowling a rather bemused Suttoner's opener who played back to a ball that bounced half way down the track and then ballooned over his defence, before removing the bails. Ryan continued in the wicket taking vein, adding another three victims to his tally, to claim impressive figures of 4 for 46.

Suttoners lost regular wickets and the only two batsman to threaten were the Barber brothers, but once they had been removed the innings stuttered before a final stand of some merit, including a glorious Malik Kirmani (reporter's opponent of the week and real friend of the club) cover drive off a Trevett slower ball. "Go fetch!" he cried and this is exactly what the fielder did. Jan Davey continued his impressive form with the ball, although the game's only real heated moment can after a caught behind from his bowling was turned down by the "4 O'clock Express". Neven duly questioned the decision and umpire and wicketkeeper duly exchanged verbal blows before Graham Elenor, who took 3 for 11 from 7 overs, intervened.

Trevett came back to claim 2 wickets and with Elenor, who snaffled 3 for 11, ably restricted Suttoners and the innings closed with the Portland outfit requiring 116 runs for victory. Graham Elenor, who had earlier claimed three wickets in an incredible spell of swing, seam and controlled aggression, sent out Joseph Trevett and David Males with the instructions, "Go bring me some runs." The going was slow with the Barber brothers causing both batsman problems, and Trevett was first to fall chasing a wide delivery that the keeper did well to hold. In came Ben Doidge (whose father, Ashley, was a really great player) and the poor boy, after spending some time alone with Jones in the changing room, looked rather out of sorts, completely missing a straight one and was sent on his way. Bill Trevett was next in, promoted because of musical commitments, and he duly saw off the Barbers with Dave Males for a number of overs, but both men found runs hard to come by.

Trevett then fell, bowled by that man Kirmani, who promptly sent the Portland batsman on his way, and in the process engineering a truly great send-off, one which will be hard to better this year. Debutante Kev "Oily" Dodson was next in and he looked relatively comfortable at the crease until removed by a Doidge LBW decision that left him fuming and vowing revenge on the Portland starlet. Jan "Wavey" Davey, along with the ever-watchful Dave Males, then saw the Triangle through to an excellent victory, with Jan finishing unbeaten on 47, an innings that included some excellent strokeplay and a couple of massive sixes.

In in all this was a good performance, the bowlers all played their part, none more so than Graham Elenor with a beautiful 3 for 11, and credit must go to Jan Davey for an excellent quickfire knock, but perhaps other than Elenor's 3 for 11, highest praise must go to Dave Males and his stonewall-like 33 not out that formed a backbone to the innnings that brought 19 points back home to the sceptred isle.
