A blistering 75 by Hayden White failed to save Portland Red Triangle from a final day defeat at Marnhull. The former Weymouth star hammered 11 fours and one towering six as the islanders set their hosts what proved a gettable winning target of 230.

White, who batted at number three, received great support from opener Jan Davey who hit 52 while Ben Doidge chipped in with a useful 18. But having been on target for a score of 250 plus, Triangle suffered a mid-order collapse with Jon Dixon, Will Curtis and Jason Styles all departing cheaply.

Early wickets were needed by the visitors as Marnhull began their reply and at 72-3 it was anyone's game. However, the arrival in the middle order of former Dorset skipper Barry Lewis scuppered Triangle's plans - he and Terry Elms put on 92 for the fourth wicket before Elms went two short of his half century.

Veteran Lewis continued to dominate at the other end, finishing unbeaten on 79, while Mike Holm looked equally impressive for his 37 not out.

Portland skipper John Ryan said, "It was a disappointing way to end the season but it was down to two things really. One, we should have scored about 250 or 260 and secondly we just couldn't get rid of Barry Lewis.

"It would have been nice to finish with a win, but I'm not too downhearted. It's been a tremendous summer in many different ways and I'm happy with the progress we've made. There have been plenty of fine individual performances and we can add Hayden's batting and Sam Polley's bowling to that list. Both performed really well at Marnhull and probably deserved to be on the winning side."

He added, almost breaking down, "Third place in Division One is a good return and the club's other sides (though obviously not as important as the first team) have done well. It just remains for me to thank all the players, supporters, sponsors and volunteers who make running the club possible, especially people like our scorer Richard Stewkesbury and Graham Elenor who looks after the ground."
