| Portland Red Triangle made it two NSA Division One wins out of two
with a hard fought four-wicket victory over Compton House
at Reforne. As in the previous week's success over Sherborne,
Jan Davey was again well to the fore taking three wickets
and scoring 56 runs as the Islanders chased a target of
198.
However, it was an unbroken stand of 83 runs between Jason Styles (51*) and Will Curtis (44*), which eventually won the day for Triangle. Coming together with Portland wobbling on 115 for 6, due largely to an excellent spell of pace bowling from Compton's Nick Price (4-30), the watchful pair saw their side home with three overs to spare. Davey's second consecutive half-century had helped bring Triangle back into contention after a shaky start to their reply. Ben Doidge went first ball of the innings and Simon Browne followed in the same opening over, getting the faintest of touches on a legside delivery. But despite skipper John Ryan collecting his team's third duck of the afternoon soon after, Davey, and then Styles and Curtis, showed the strength in depth that the islanders' batting now boasts. Earlier Compton had started well as opener Mike Harper (78) anchored their innings as the visitors provided an excellent platform at 148-2 for a final ten over onslaught. But Randell and that man Davey grabbed three wickets each as only 48 runs were conceded, leaving the visitors to post what proved a gettable total. Skipper John Ryan said: "After all the rain at the start of the season it's nice to just be playing cricket, although it's great to have won our first two games. The lads showed a great fighting spirit, refusing to give up against a strong Compton House side and if we continue to show the same belief then we should be in for a good season." |
