A magnificent undefeated innings of 178 by Gary Randell led Portland Red Triangle to an emphatic 165 run win against Marnhull in a NSA Division One top of the table clash at Reforne. Randell set a new club record for the highest individual innings, eclipsing the 159 scored by veteran Melvyn Tremlin, taking just 117 balls in a knock that included 10 sixes and 18 fours. It could have been a lot less if Marnhull had been able to hold their catches, as he was dropped four times. Debutant Hayden White (19) along with regular opener Jan Davey (20) got Triangle off to a rapid start putting on 39 in the first 5 overs, before captain Les Elsworth (3-97) dismissed them both bringing Simon Browne and Randell to the crease. Browne (83) rode his luck yet again when he survived a first ball lbw appeal, but then combined with Randell from the seventh over to set a new record third wicket partnership of 242. A cameo innings from Jon Dixon (10) from four deliveries and then able support from Jason Styles (8 no) in the final overs saw the islanders storm to 339-4, their highest team total at Reforne. Faced by this daunting task, Marnhull lost wickets steadily in reply as Simon Browne (4-66) and Jan Davey (4-58) proved costly, but effective as the visitors stumbled to 16-3. It was only ex-Dorset skipper, Barry Lewis (77), joined by Tom Elms (30) who offered any resistance to the Triangle attack putting on 57 for the fourth wicket. Browne and Davey struck again removing Elms and then the rest of the middle order as Marnhull were once again on the back foot. Veteran spinner Jon Dixon finally removed Lewis ending the visitor’s hopes and they were dismissed for 174, as Triangle’s title quest got back on track. |
