Portland Red Triangle 2nd’s suffered
their first defeat in NSA Division 6 this season at the hands of Wayfarers
2nd’s. Grant Neven’s side lost by 24 runs as their lead at the top of the table
was cut by their fellow promotion rivals.
After losing the toss and being
asked to bat, Wayfarers lost an early wicket when Steve Bishop was caught by
Rob Hodges off Waight, after he’d already been dropped twice off the bowling of
Sam Polley. This brought together Pritchard (51) and Davis (55) who added 89
for the 2nd wicket before former Triangle first team skipper, Martin
Hewson tempted Pritchard into a rash shot and Hodges held onto to his second of
the afternoon.
Opening bowlers Waight (1-41) and
Polley (0-31) had restricted the home side to 81 from the first 24 overs, but
it was change bowler Rob Hodges who turned the game in Triangle’s favour.
Hodges recorded superb figures of 6-57 as he first removed the dangerous Davis
before making short work of the middle order and tail as Wayfarers ended on
200-9 after 45 overs.
Openers Dave Males (12) and Ken
Dodson (45) set an electrifying pace scoring 65 runs off the first 12 overs,
before the cavalier Dodson was trapped lbw by Riddle. It was Riddle (4-20) who
helped the home side take command of the innings as he followed up his
expensive first over, by only conceding 10 runs off his next 11 as the visitors
slumped to 128-7 after 35 overs.
Simon Barrett (36), with able support from Sam
Polley (14), looked to be leading Portland to an unlikely victory until he
holed out to Rumney on the first ball of Williams’ second spell. Waight (24 no)
with Polley, then Morris, helped secure maximum batting points but the
islanders fell 24 short of the winning total. |
