With the slimmest chance of promotion on offer, Quayle
took his team to title chasers Beaminster in the hope of causing
an upset, or at the very least denting the home side's chances.
Initially starting with 10 men, as the skipper had waited at
the wrong pickup point for Adrian Lucas, who luckily was driven
to the game by his mother; Pete Tombs assumed the responsibility
for the toss, and promptly lost it.
Triangle looked to have started well, after
the home side inserted Quayle's men on a damp, but drying wicket.
Gates fell first, bowled by sometime Beaminster first teamer
Martin. The skipper didn't last much longer, as the always keen
to umpire Khylo Farley triggered Quayle lbw, to a ball which
Tony said "pitched two feet outside leg stump and
hit the middle of his thigh pad". Khylo was soon replaced
as umpire by the fuming Quayle, who witnessed a procession of
Triangle's middle order.
Tom Cole fended off a slow bouncer, that got
big on him, and with a quiet yelp he gifted an easy catch to
mid-wicket. Tombs had looked out of sorts all season, and did
little to bolster his confidence when he slashed at a wide delivery
and was caught off veteran John Hollely. Dave Clifford then
put on one of the bigger partnerships of the innings, 22 before
he was undone by young Brown, who produced a fine 6 over spell
to demolish the visitor's batting lineup. Morris, Strong and
finally Dave Males were his other victims as it was left to
youngsters Farley, Lucas and Dixon Jr. to rescue the innings.
The miracle didn't happen as Triangle were bowled out for a
dismal 79.
Beaminster went into bat as the sun shone
and the wicket dried rapidly. Martin showed Triangle's bowlers
no mercy as Quayle pinned his hopes on the leading wicket takers
from the past two seasons to salvage some points. It was Clifford
who made the initial breakthroughs removing opener Barrow and
his replacement Clark in the same over. Alas that was to be
the high point for Quayle, as he saw three catches spilled in
the same over, the first a simple take at waist height on the
boundary to Tombs, who let it bounce off him, then Lucas was
unlucky to be picked out in successive balls as he failed with
two spectacular diving attempts. Martin was allowed to reach
his 50 by his partner, and at the same time, hit the winning
runs as Beaminster reached the target in just over 12 overs.
