Portland Red Triangle opened their Dorset Division Seven (East/West)
campaign with a thrilling three-wicket win over
Wimborne Thirds at Reforne.
It was the visitors who batted first with skipper
Rob Whittle (48) leading the way but he was stopped
in his tracks by Michael Males. Males (4-37), Tony
Morris and debutant Glyn Bartholomew all bowled
tightly to reduce Wimborne to 174, and they were
backed up with some good fielding, particularly
from youngsters Paul Cook and Khylo Farley.
Triangle were 48 without loss after seven overs
in reply before losing opener Ken Dodson. This heralded
a mini-collapse but a steady 62-run partnership
between 14-year old Aaron Riley and his skipper
Tony Quayle got the hosts back in contention.
Quayle produced a match-winning innings of 71
(including a huge six off opposing captain Rob Whittle's
gentle medium pace) which put Portland in control
and it was left to Grant Neven to see the islanders
home with some hefty blows late on.
