Portland Red Triangle Under 12's 70-4 V Weymouth under 12's 137-0 Portland's under 12's lost their first game of the season to a strong Weymouth side in a match that kept a good crowd of supporters enthralled throughout. Weymouth batted first and their top three batsmen all produced fine stroke play against a depleted Portland attack missing both Matthew Randell and Ryan Johnson due to injury. Despite all three having to retire the Portland bowling attack led by Skipper Harry Stone never gave up and produced some accurate bowling and tight fielding to contain Weymouth to 137 at the close of their allotted overs. Portland's openers Jordan Wilson and Chris Theakstone produced a steady opening stand, but fell behind the run rate against accurate bowling from the Weymouth boys. With both openers falling in quick succession, Portland's backs were to the wall and despite a valiant effort fell 67 runs short after the loss of 2 further wickets. Portland Secretary Grant Neven was disappointed at losing, but added "The boys can take a lot from this defeat. Without both Ratty and Ryan we knew we would have an uphill struggle against a strong and well-practiced team like Weymouth. Liam batted well and remained undefeated, Kai Dempsey produced some fine cricket on his debut and special praise must go to 9 year old Shaun Tugwell who gave his all, almost took two wickets and finished the innings at the crease with his first runs in competitive cricket." Portland Man Of The Match: Shaun Tugwell for an outstanding effort on his debut. Portland: H. Stone, C. Theakstone, J. Wilson, K. Dempsey, L. Tugwell, S. Tugwell. |
