Match Report by Grant Neven

Portland Red Triangle Under 16's 126-1 lost to Cerne Valley Under 16's 130-3.

Portland: C. Laws (Cpt), O. Whisker, S. Whisker, D. Strong, L. Hallett, J. Pring.

History was made at Redlands in a thrilling encounter between to talented cricketing sides when 14 year old Samantha Whisker became the first female to represent the club at youth level.

Put into bat Portland lost an early wicket with opener Dan Strong being caught with his score on 6. Captain Callan Laws then joined Oliver Whisker at the crease and these two batted with style and patience against an accurate Cerne attack. With both players having to retire undefeated on 25, Jordan Pring on his debut and Luke Hallett both played some good looking shots as Portland closed on 126-1.

Cerne's reply began well with their openers being particularly punishing against any loose balls. With both openers having to retire, the game swung back and forth as wickets fell and runs kept just ahead of the required run rate. Despite a valiant effort by the Portlanders  with the ball and backed up by some sublime fielding Cerne struck the winning runs in the last over.

Club Chairman Glyn Bartholomew was full of praise for both sides he commented "This game was a great advert for Youth Cricket, both sides gave 100% and both clubs should be proud of them. Samantha's fielding and packing up were superb, Jordan can hold his head high after an impressive debut and the rest of the team should be proud of their efforts."

Portland Man of the Match: Oliver Whisker for an excellent all round effort.
