Weymouth 97 All Out, Portland Red Triangle 100-4 A good crowd at Redlands were entertained by two evenly-matched teams, who produced a game in which both teams were a credit to their respective clubs. Having won the toss Weymouth elected to bat, and there opening pair made steady progress against some tight bowling. Having reached 39 the first wicket fell to a fine run out by Olly Whisker off his own bowling. With both K. Womble and B. Armfield having to retire on 25, it looked as if Weymouth could be heading for a large score. Change bowler Luke Hallett then produced a fine spell of bowling capturing 2 wickets for 16 runs as the Weymouth innings fell apart. Fine fielding accounted for two more run outs and despite both Armfield and Womble returning, Weymouth were bowled out for 97 in the last of their allotted overs. Portland's openers Dan Strong and Simon Proffitt kept up with the run rate against some excellent work in the field. With Strong having to retire, Captain Callan Laws and Proffitt continued to run well and play the bad ball keeping just above the required run rate. Weymouth got back into the game with some accurate bowling and excellent fielding as a run out and two fine catches accounted for the quick loss of Portland wickets. With 2 overs to go Portland required 10 to win a well run 4 by the returning Strong and 2 wides from Weymouth, enabled Portland to pass their target with 9 balls to spare. Portland Secretary Grant Neven commented: "Both sides produced a game that was both a credit to themselves, their clubs and a great advert for cricket. Our boys have improved 100% since the club began junior coaching last year, and this is due to all the dedicated coaching staff and supporters who have given their time and effort. The boys today produced a display of which they can be proud. Credit to the Weymouth side, who were a great advert for their own club and junior cricket." Portland Man Of The Match: Luke Hallett for his fine fielding and vital wickets. Portland Team: C. Laws, D. Strong, O. Whisker, S. Proffitt, A. Chapple, L. Hallett |
