Man of the Match

Pavilion Sports: Tatchell

Match report from Dorset Echo

RED Triangle skipper Simon Barrett has backed his side to "learn from the mistakes" they made in this disappointing defeat at Slades Farm.

The islanders lost the toss and struggled on a damp track but they also had themselves to blame for some poor running between the stumps.

In the end they were skittled for just 121 which the hosts comfortably overcome in reply.

Lining up without influential duo Gary Randell and Jason Styles, Portland were always going to need a big batting performance from elsewhere but only Martin Hewson (27), new-signing Dave Price (29) and Grant Neven (23) really troubled the home attack.

Barrett said: "This looks like a comfortable win for Pavilion Sports on paper but it was closer than you might think. We lost the game in three key areas really.

"It was undoubtedly far easier to bat second when the ball was older and the wicket drier so losing the toss did not help but we also gifted them three wickets due to bad running.

"The third thing was not taking the early opportunity to dismiss Tatchell who was just in a different class from the other batsmen we faced.

"On the positive side, Dave Price made an instant impact on his debut with the bat and we look forward to more runs from him in future games. We will now learn from the mistakes made and regroup for this week's home fixture against old rivals Hamworthy."

Having lost a crucial toss, the visitors struggled to find runs in the early stages of their knock as home seamers Beale, Dean and Martin put the pressure on with the ball.

Hewson dug in and compiled a careful 27 but not many others showed the same discipline although Price and Neven did make some headway towards the tail of the innings.

A trio of silly run-outs did not help Red Triangle's cause with Jan Davey, Price and Alex Charlton the culprits. In the end they were bowled out in just 42 overs.

The track got better as the afternoon went on so when Sports came to bat they found life a bit easier. Jon Dixon (2-27) and Sam Polley (1-15) bowled well for the islanders but Tatchell's classy 77 not out proved the difference.

The talented opener produced some fine strokes but he was dropped in the first over when only on four - a moment that Portland will look back on with huge regret.
