Man of the Match

Jason Styles

Match report from Dorset Echo

Talented batsman Jason Styles used all his experience as he led Portland to a fabulous win at Reforne. The hard-hitter scored an undefeated 139 that included 23 fours and two sixes and shared a 200-partnership with Gary Randell (66 not out) who was also on top form.

Poole fought gallantly in reply with R Harrington (69), J Pilley (49) and G Hassall (52 not out) producing some excellent strokes but the visitors fell just short.

Red Triangle skipper Simon Barrett said: "This was a great way to start the season and it shows just how much we missed Jason and Gary last year. I have not seen Jason bat that well for a good few years and he thoroughly deserved his century, which undoubtedly set up the win.

"The spirit in the team was great, with youngsters Scott Males and Elliot Sawyer leading the way in the field. The total was a super effort given the seamer-friendly conditions in the first 10 to 15 overs but we do need to improve our mid-innings bowling if we are to restrict teams to around 200 in future games.

"However, a win is a win and we are happy with the 18 points gained."

Red Triangle lost two early wickets with Martin Hewson departing for just one and Sawyer suffering a duck but Styles and Barrett (23) soon turned things around to set a decent platform with a stand of 58. With the score on 73, Barrett got clean bowled by Porter but that brought Randell to the crease who along with Styles showed no mercy as they hit boundary after boundary to lead their side to a big total.

The visitors made a cautious start against the accurate left-arm spin of Jon Dixon (1-26 off 12 overs) and the threatening bounce of Sam Polley (1-45) before Pilley began to make some headway with a series of boundaries. Town continued to fight hard with Harrington also playing some great shots but they were unable to get on top enough to get ahead of the run rate.

Needing 142 off the last 15 overs, Hassall struck a handsome 52 (three sixes and three fours) but in the end experienced bowlers Randell (2-17) and Jan Davey (1-73) held their nerve to complete a 28-run triumph.
