| Match report from Dorset Echo |
Portland ended their Dorset Funeral Plan Division Two season with a disappointing defeat at Reforne and have now been relegated for the second successive season. Their opponents, Shaftesbury ensured they will remain in Division Two for 2008 thanks to an impressive all-round display. Batting first, the visitors made a steady start to reach 88-1 off 23 overs but when Jon Dixon had completed his accurate 12-over spell (1-30) Russell hit freely and despatched boundaries to all parts of the Reforne field. He was particularly severe on some wayward late innings bowling and ended with a superb, unbeaten 118. The islanders made a terrible start to their innings, losing both openers in the second over but Dixon's hard-hitting 48 showed his best batting form of the season and fully justified his promotion to the number three slot. In addition, Dave Price played some forceful strokes and 17-year-old Aaron Riley showed calm and sound judgment in compiling an assured 24. Regrettably, the remaining batsmen were unable to keep up with the required scoring rate and with White taking an all-bowled hat-trick, Portland were dismissed for just 145. Captain Simon Barrett said: "We were comfortably beaten today and although we fielded a much under strength side, both our batting and bowling should have been better. That said, Jon Dixon's all-round contribution was excellent and Aaron Riley batted with a maturity that suggests he will play a lot more games in the first team for many, many years to come. "The summary of 2007 is should have done better' and during the close season we need to sit down and make an honest assessment of what is required to turn things around for next year." |
