Man of the Match

Alex Charlton

Match report from Dorset Echo

Portland Red Triangle skipper Simon Barrett refused to get too downhearted after this defeat despite the fact it has put his side further in the mire. The islanders were set a target of 193-7 but despite being well placed on 92-3 after 30 overs in reply they still fell 29 runs short.

Barrett, whose side is currently third-bottom in Dorset Funeral Plan League Division Two, said: "The result has put us further in the mire but there were some positives to take out of it. Chris Skinner does not normally bowl but he took 2-28 off 12 overs straight through, which was excellent, and Jon Dixon also did well, taking 3-33 off 10 overs "We also fielded quite well. Elliot Sawyer took a superb catch to get rid of one of their openers but later in their innings a few of their players chanced their arms and it came off for them.

"In the end we probably let them get 20 runs too many but having said that we were 92-3 off 30 overs needing 102 to win off the last 15. That was a target I expected us to achieve but between overs 32 and 37 we struggled, scoring just three runs and losing two wickets. We finished on 165-7 but special mentions must go to Alex Charlton (28 not out) and Glen Kelman (25). Glen is more of a bowler but he came in at number three and did very well.

"Looking at the table there are five or six teams down at the bottom who are all very close so as long as we don't drop any clangers we should be okay. We have got Shroton at home next. They are top but we still think we are capable of beating anyone on our own ground."

Portland started well with the ball restricting their opponents to 44-3 at one stage but a fine partnership between Wayman (23) and Ashford (59) then lifted the hosts to 129-4.Reed (46 not out) also batted superbly in the middle-order and with 26 extras enhancing the total further Portland faced a tough task in reply.

Barrett (32), Kelman and Dixon (27) all worked hard with the willow but when their side collapsed from 96-4 to 117-7 the chase was pretty much over even though Charlton did well towards the end.
