Leaving the murky, rain-sodden streets of Weymouth and Portland behind, Triangle's Sunday 2nd XI travelled to fellow basement dwellers Pokesdown Willow 2nds. The game started in light rain, though it didn't help that Triangle turned up late, partly because captain Squeaker Browne was head of the convoy and drives at an average speed of 45mph and that he lead the side through Poole town centre as he thought at first we were playing at Poole Park instead of Kings Park.
The game was reduced to 40 overs a side and Pokesdown put the islanders into bat on a damp, green wicket. Paul Cook and Buster Brown opened, but the Irishman was soon back in the pavilion after being bowled by a shooter following a ball that had popped up off a length. Aaron Riley came and went, caught trying to hook a high full toss and wasn't happy when Jody Locke told him later that if he hadn't hit it he would have called a no ball. Cook was next out, trying once too often to hit the spinner over the top and was bowled playing all round a straight one.
There was then a brief period of stability as Ryan Percy and Ben Riley shared a partnership of 19 until Ben was unlucky to be caught by a diving catch in the covers. Callan Laws was sent in at 6 and put on 20 with Percy before he too was caught. As Tony Morris hurried off to get padded up, Darrell Farley was walking out to the middle, and he apparently lasted 3 balls before he was bowled. Morris then ran from the dressing room to avoid being timed out, but needn't have bothered as the one ball he faced was an inswinging yorker from Andy Fisher which proved too good for him. Locke then rushed from the changing rooms to see out the hattrick ball, but it was Percy who was next out for 39, unable to get enough on the ball to carry the infield.
Meanwhile on the sidelines, Paul Cook was sporting an ill-advised wife-beater vest and ear ring, which Squeaker picked up on immediately and called him either Freddy Mercury or the Human Bone, (as a fitting description for his waif-like physique) for the rest of the afternoon. Squeaker then, as only he can, managed to get in a war of words with Pokesdown's scorer after making a passing comment about one of Pokesdown's larger players. Matters weren't helped by young Laws who nearly earned himself a slap when he enquired if her short temper was, to put more politely than he did, due to cyclical forces of nature at work. Aarron took over the scoring and then engaged her in a battle of wits, saying that violence wasn't the answer as he had learned from being sent for anger management when he was younger. Riley then came unstuck when he had to ask the meaning of the word "derogatory", unfortunately just after he proudly stated he got a B in English. Riley's powers were waning when Laws pointed out his grade in Geography must have been a mistake as he'd been holding the map upside-down in his role as navigator earlier.
Back to the game, and skipper Browne and Keith Brown had played a pair of cameo innings with the resolute Locke, as the score moved above 90 for a point. Keith's patience then snapped and he tried to send the ball into orbit but hit it straight at a fielder as Triangle were all out for 94, Fisher ending with 5/16.
By this time the rain had finally stopped and as the sun tried to break through the clouds, the temperature and humidity rose. Triangle were treated to a fair, but not brilliant tea which Aarron Riley agreed to review when his computer gets broadband up and running again. Squeaker opened the bowling with Morris and immediately tied down the Willows' openers. After the first 12 overs they'd held the home side to 16 runs for the loss of one wicket - a fine diving catch by Aaron off Browne, with 12 runs off Morris' bowling, the rest in byes. Squeaker gave Morris a rest and brought on Keith who bowled a mixed bag of short and full deliveries, somehow getting a wicket as the batsman hit it straight at Aarron, who managed to catch it between his thighs as he went to ground.
Browne finished his miserly 9 over spell, yielding just 3 runs and Locke was on at his end. Pokesdown began to score freely, though their main batsman Watson was lucky to be there after surviving hitting the ball straight at a diving Aarron, who only dropped him due to the sheer force of the shot, though prevented a certain boundary. Watson was eventually out when he stepped back to try and cut Darrell Farley but instead chopped down on his own stumps and was dismissed hit wicket. It didn't matter at this stage as Pokesdown needed just 3 to win, so Laws was brought into the attack and sent his first delivery down leg side, and despite Buster's dive he was unable to stop it going for 4 byes.
