Triangle's cup run came to a halt at Redlands, as RNSTS continued on their unbeaten run in a closer game than the result suggests. Dave Price chose to make first use of the wicket following a successful call on the toss, sending out Laurie West and a nervous-looking Grant Neven, complete with helmet. The added cranial protection appeared superfluous when faced with the medium pace, line and length bowling of RNSTS' Dave Trotter and Steve Budd.
Triangle made a steady start with West shouldering the responsibility of scoring as Neven got tied down, possibly unsighted by the grill. West went first, attempting to hit Budd over the top, but only found Richards. A change of bowling saw the headgear discarded, but the little guy was soon back in the pavilion, undone by leg spinner Adam Iyer. Elliott Sawyer joined Dave Price and the skipper was on a mission for runs, nearly running Sawyer to exhaustion with a lung-busting 5. Young Womble accounted for both of them, Elliott caught at short leg by a diving Martin Hewson, while Price holed out to Richards in the deep. Iyer then quickly accounted for Morris and Clifford as Triangle finished on 92/6.
Quick wickets were needed and Morris spurned two chances in succession to have Richards caught and bowled. RNSTS saw off Triangle's opening bowlers with quick runs, but then two fine catches by Martin Weller saw them on their way, giving West and Clifford a wicket. Womble then combined with Budd to get RNSTS to within sight of victory before he hit the ball straight to Clifford at mid on. McKay joined Budd to steer his side home with 9 balls remaining, as Richie Samuel had the honour of having the winning runs hit off his one and only over. |
