Bournemouth 2nd XI vs PRT Saturday 2nd XI
|Played at Chapel Gate, Bournemouth, 25th May 2008
Dorset Cricket League Division 7
|PRT won by 1 wicket|
|Toss won by:||Bournemouth|
|PRT Man of the Match||Dan Strong|
The Saturday 2nds had been stuck in the lower reaches of the Dorset League for a few seasons, sometimes flirting with promotion. The class of 2008 had a lot of promise, with a mix of youth and experience, and a captain in Pete Tombs who offered a more mentally stable reign than those before him.
However, the side hadn't recorded a win by the end of the first month, so they headed to the home of promotion contenders Bournemouth 2nds with some trepidation. After the home side had elected to bat and Triangle had bowled them out for just 103, it looked like that first win would be a formality...
Triangle's 2nd XI finally notched up their first win of their Division 7 campaign with a thrilling finish at Chapel Gate. A superb fielding display saw the hosts dismissed for just 103, with Dan Strong (3/31) and Michael Males (3/27) leading the way picking up early wickets.
Vice-skipper Scott Males (4/19) then put in a typically frugal spell, bagging 4 wickets after Bournemouth had recovered from 61/5, before another collapse started with the score on 91. Strong returned to mop up the tail as the green wicket continued to favour the bowlers.
Triangle's reply got off to a bad start as Smart and Quayle surrendered their wickets cheaply, but Laurie West got the scoreboard ticking over with quick 22. At the other end, Dave Males was back to his grafting best, grinding out 14 runs from 28 overs. His resistance was broken when he was bowled by Yathati, shortly after West attempted to hit Symons over the top and found the only fielder on the leg side.
This proved to be the start of the collapse with 6 wickets falling for 30 runs and Triangle were left reeling on 68/9, but tail-enders Dan Strong and Olly Whisker rallied. A fine last-wicket partnership of 38 gave the islanders a sniff of victory and it was left to Strong to hit the winning runs with a ball to spare.
