The Sunday 2nds were used to chasing large totals, but very rarely got anywhere near them. On this day, they came close.
Tom Cole was largely seen as a decent batsman, with a good eye, who could hit a ball a long way, so was mostly deployed as a pinch hitter in the middle order - a right-handed version of Dicko. Now and again, this approach would come off and the runs would flow off his bat, but apart from a couple of quick fifties, he'd never pushed on to a big score.
Jon Dixon's 208 against Bridport had broken Gary Randell's club record the week before this match. Tom looked like he might be on course to eclipse both scores, but in the end had to settle for a new club record for the highest individual innings away from Reforne.
In the return fixture, Tom scored 78, totalling 254 runs against Wareham, by the time they finally got him out, they were sick of the sight of him.
Triangle's Sunday 2nds finished 16 runs short of their victory target in a thrilling game at Wareham. After being asked to field, Squeaker Browne struck early, bowling Hayes for 8, the home side briefly rocking on 14/1.
However, this lasted only briefly as Early (78) and Farley (90) added 136 for the 2nd wicket. Richard "M'Lady" Stewkesbury tempted Farley into one big hit too many, who could only find the waiting hands of Tom Cole in the deep, missing out on a deserved century.
Once again Wareham were forced to dig deep, with Bishop (92*) joining Early to put on 124, Stewkesbury (1/48) Paul Cook (0/36) and Darrell Farley (1/65) feeling the brunt of their assault. Farley was run out for 78 near the end of the innings, which halted their progress, while Triangle's Darrell Farley trapped Harris lbw, but Wareham had a healthy 288/4 at the close.
Triangle's reply stutttered with Khylo Farley departing for a duck, soon followed by Cook (7). Tom Cole and Gareth Burrows saw the score to 50 before Burrows missed a delivery from Britt.
Cole took on scoring responsibilities, sharing a 4th wicket stand of 57 with Ben Riley (4), before Darrell Farley was run out with the score on 120. Rupert (12) offered more support as Triangle continued their chase, until he was caught off Earley at 149/6.
Veteran Jodie Locke rolled back the years with a dashing innings of 21 which included 3 fours and a six. Their partnership of 48 was broken when Jodie was caught and bowled by Early. Meanwhile, Cole had soared past his previous top score, reaching his century, and was eyeing 150.
Squeaker Browne, in trademark yellow cap, rotated the strike as Cole showed no mercy to the hosts' bowlers. Browne fell for a single, bringing in Adrian Lucas, a man with an impeccable forward defensive.
Cole continued to hog the strike as Triangle were edging towards an unlikely victory. Despite a fine display of measured hitting from Cole, whose 176 not out (21 fours, 8 sixes) sent him to third in the all-time standings behind Jon Dixon and Gary Randell, the islanders still required 35 runs from the final six balls. Alas, Tom could only manage to hit 19 from that last over as Triangle ended an agonising 16 runs short. It was a fine effort by the final pairing, their 56-run partnership had given Triangle a sight of victory.
