ALMOST every member of Red
Triangle CC gave up time to take part in Cricket Force Weekend which was run in
conjunction with the English Cricket Board, (ECB), and sponsored nationally by
Nat West.
The Portland event was also sponsored locally by B&Q
Weymouth which supplied paint and other materials, Portland Stone which donated
the use of a skip and George Inn landlord Geoff Daniels who gave every senior
member a well-deserved pint at the end of their hard work.
The weekend saw players
tackling the brambles and other overgrowth around the perimeter of the field,
cutting the grass to ensure a velvety smooth pitch and collecting rubbish.
They were also removing the
evidence of fly-tipping from behind the pavilion and refurbishing the entrance.
The pavilion itself
has been completely redecorated to give it a fresh, bright appearance and the
kitchen has been given a new look by the tea ladies. |
Secretary Grant Neven said:
"We are proud of our club and pleased with the result of our weekend's
work.
"We want the club to be
seen as a focal point for the community and to encourage youngsters, boys and
girls, to take up the game and for families to come along and spectate at
matches and to join in our social events."
The club also hopes to
attract local business sponsorship for their senior, junior and, hopefully,
ladies' and girls' teams in the future.
Grant said: "Cricket is
not just for gentlemen, we have an open-door policy for everyone."
Red Triangle has four ECB-qualified
Level 1 coaches, Grant, John Dixon, Kevin Dodson and Andy Randle who is the
youth co-ordinator.
All are trained in first aid,
child protection and welfare and they hold coaching sessions for 9-18 year olds
every Monday night.
Chairman Conrad Cole
took a few minutes off from relaying the path outside the pavilion to talk
about the club ethos as it has been until recently. |
He said:
"Changes have to he made and we are aiming to run on a more professional
basis, to be community orientated and to gain Sport England Accreditation by
this time next year."
In addition to the
new look given to the whole complex by the members, there is a fine new
fixtures and forthcoming events board erected to face out to Wide Street which
was sponsored by Hardy's Signs of Weymouth.
"We arc all
anxious to improve our game and become a force to be reckoned with,"
concluded Grant. "But the main thing I would say to players and spectators
is enjoy your cricket!"
