Needed for the 2012 Season

1. Could you spare a couple of hours once a week to help run the Junior sides? The club needs scorers, assistant managers and people to help run the tuck shop (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) - it's only a couple of hours and by helping out you will be helping to keep Cricket alive on the Island.

2. Can you score, umpire or help make a Tea? The club is always on the look out for people who can do the job - the weekend teams in particular and the Saturday 1sts are looking for an Umpire (it's now a league requirement).

We are seeking dedicated people to join our outstanding but small band of tea providers - could you spare a few hours a weekend - then we need you.

Contact: Club Secretary Grant Neven on 07887943621 for more details.

Pre-Season Friendly Preview

Portland Red Triangle begin their preparations for the new season with a Friendly against Bradford Abbas at The Windowman Oval, Reforne this Saturday
at 2.00pm.

Club Secretary and Saturday 2nd XI Captain, Grant Neven is looking forward to the season:
"The club is aiming to build on last year's consistency and the Sunday First team's League winning performances." He added,
"Last year the club made huge strides on the field, players performed to their strengths and all the club's teams produced cricket that all at the club can be proud of."

He further added, "The target now is to build on this and for all teams to push for promotion. We have the ability, the drive and the players and have trained hard over the winter to improve in all aspects of the game, with lady luck on our side who knows what further honours could be heading to Portland?"

He went even further, adding: "New signings Simon Bendall and Ian Springer will be making the debuts with both showing good form with both bat and ball at nets, Lawrence West returns after a year's
sabbatical to strengthen the batting and veteran Jon Dixon will be hoping to continue from where he left off last season with the ball."

Team for Saturday: G. Neven (cpt, wkt), R .Price, D. Males, S. Males, I. Springer, J. Cameron, O. Whisker, L. West, S. Bendall, J. Dixon, C. Theakstone
Cricket Without Boundaries

The Dorset Cricket Board and the Dorset Rangers have teamed up to help a Dorset coach Grant Neven from Portland Red Triangle Cricket club join up with the Cricket Without Boundaries programme to create a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Grant otherwise known as Stumpy takes up the story... "As if travelling wasn't bad enough, once there I faced the daunting prospect of an interview for Cricket without Boundaries (CWB).
The journey itself was pretty straight forward, although Sat Nav had a major problem with Birmingham's one way system! The
interview was nerve racking and very in-depth, but I felt that I had done OK and returned back to the joys of Weymouth in good heart."

"7 Days later an E-mail confirmed my acceptance on the Scheme - now the planning and fund raising can begin. I will endeavour to keep you all informed of further developments and my final destination"

Cricket Without Boundaries is a charity set up in 2005 using the medium of cricket to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa.

There are three main goals:

Spreading cricket through coaching children and teaching adults how to coach.

Linking the sport to HIV/AIDS awareness by incorporating messages into coaching sessions.

To bring local communities together and empower them through cricket.

Working in partnership with the Cricket Associations of each country, the British High Commissions and the ICC, CWB follow a simple three-stage sports development structure to ensure ongoing development of the game. This structure features:-

Coach education – each group includes a tutor who can award Level 1 qualifications.

Schools coaching

Tournaments which introduce a true competitive element.

CWB are currently recruiting for projects in Autumn 2012 going to 5 countries:-

Botswana, Kenya, Uganda, Ruanda and Cameroon.

Further details are available on the CWB web site
www.cricketwithoutboundaries.com.

CWB are particularly keen to recruit existing coaches and to form ongoing relationships with local Cricket Boards throughout the UK. Coaches returning from these projects are universal in their belief that they have made a difference in Africa and that their own abilities and appreciation of coaching priorities has been greatly enhanced by the experience.

Saturday Team News

Skipper Simon Barrett fears nothing but fear itself (and clowns) as he
prepares for the trip to face Stalbridge 2nds. Speaking exclusively to the
Dorset Echo, Simon said, "Having lost last weekend's game to the weather, we are
just keeping our fingers crossed that it goes ahead. Quite a few of the team
played up at Stalbridge last Sunday and their pitch was pretty dry. The outfield
was a bit sluggish but the fact we managed to still get out there is hopefully a
good sign ahead of tomorrow."

Barrett continued, "Scott [Males] is unavailable and Simon [Proffitt] is back
at university, Both of them are bowlers so that is going to weaken our attack a
little bit, but we have got others that can cover. The fact Dave [Adkins] is
back will help and although Stalbridge have some good players, we will just go
up there and be positive."

"We played them last year at home and beat them, but the fact it is early
season makes it less predictable," predicted Simon. "However, I'll repeat what I
said last week and that is if we can carry on the form we showed at the close of
last season (over 8 months ago) we will have no reason to fear anyone."

Saturday 1st XI vs Stalbridge 2nd XI (Away): S. Barrett (cpt), C. Leake, D. Adkins, E. Sawyer, G. Price, J. Davey, O. Whisker, C. Laws, J. Dixon, M. Randell, E. Thureirajah

After last week's wash out PRT 2nd's hope to get their 2012 campaign under way with a home fixture against local rivals Beaminster 2nds at the Windowman Oval Reforne 2pm.
Triangle welcome back opening bowler Sam Polley and include all rounder Rev. W. Gates, who makes a welcome return to the club.
Skipper Grant Neven, "I'm hopeful that with the Rev's influence the weather gods will smile on Portland and that his charges can finally make a start to what promises to be an exciting season for the club."

He added "It's great to have the Rev and Sam back, both are proven match winners and will add to the overall strength of the squad. Teenager Ryan Price also returns to bolster the batting which on paper looks at its strongest for what could be an interesting game. Beaminster 2nds are an unknown quantity and I am sure that they will provide good opposition. It's down to my eleven to show the rest of this league that Portland are in business and are full of confidence."

Saturday 2nd XI vs Beaminster 2nd XI (Home): G. Neven (cpt), A. Quayle, L. West, S. Bendall, P. Laming, R. Price, I. Springer, S. Polley, D. Males, J. Cameron. 12th Man M.Colbrooke.
(11th Man W. Gates?)

Matchball sponsors: Red House Estate Agents

Saturday Team News

Simon Barrett, expectant

Skipper Simon Barrett is expecting a close encounter when his side travel to
play Bridport 2nd XI at Brewery Field, "The last time we met they needed six off the final ball to tie and got it.

It is always tight when we play them and there is always that extra spice to it
with the local rivalry so it should be fun."

Portland (135) suffered a five-wicket defeat at Stalbridge Seconds (139-5) last weekend.

Elil Thureirajah snared three wickets and Elliott Sawyer scored 40 with the bat but the hosts proved just too strong on the day.

Barrett added: "The wicket was quite slow, which is what you expect at this stage of the season, and from 77-2 off 22 overs and ticking along, we ended up 135 all out after losing a clutch of wickets. One of their bowlers picked up five wickets but no offence to him, all he really did was just bowl straight on a good line and length.

"It didn’t turn or anything like that and unfortunately we just kept picking the wrong ball to go at.

The other big difference between the two sides was that they punished any bad
ball whereas we did not time it as efficiently as that.

"Elil bowled well but the rest of our bowlers didn’t quite come up to the same standard.

Elliott Sawyer also batted really well and looked set to go on to get a big
score until he unfortunately picked the wrong ball and got caught. Once he went
we never really recovered."

Saturday 1st XI: S. Barrett (cpt), C. Leake, D. Adkins, J. Davey, G. Price, O. Whisker, R. Price, M. Randell, J. Dixon, E. Thureirajah, S. Polley, S. Males.

An updated from our soon to be man in Africa, Grant Neven:

Dates still to be announced, but I now know were I will be going - Kenya.

I will soon be organising fundraisers, I will not involve the club, but would appreciate any support that club members as individuals can supply.
Item one on my list for proposed fund raising is a mountain bike - does any club member or supporter have an unused mountain bike I could loan - if so please contact me on 07887943621
