Portland Red Triangle will be hosting a Bumper Weekend of Cricket starting on Friday 27th August at 5.30pm when the club's veteran's side The Pirates will entertain a Select Eleven in a Twenty20 match.
The highlight of the Bank Holiday Weekend will take place on Monday starting at 1.30pm when a team of Portland Legends led by Gary Randell will play a Portland Red Triangle Select in a memorial game for the late John Baxter. Club President Brian Riley praised the club and all involved in staging the game "John was a great loss to the club. He was much admired both as a player and supporter of the club for a number of years. He was instrumental and a major driving force behind the construction of the club's present pavilion and is greatly missed by all at the club who had the honour of meeting him."
The Legends will include such stalwarts as Ashley Doodge, Phil
White and
Melvyn Tremlin. All ex-players, supporters of the club and cricket fans
are invited to attend.
On the same day the Portland Cabin Boys and the Pirates will be
travelling to Sixpenny Handley to take part in the annual sixes
competition, with the Cabin Boys looking to retain the Trophy they won
last year.

Triangle's
Saturday 1st XI slumped to another defeat, this time at the hands of
Cattistock. A fine stand by Chris Leak and Simon Barrett had eased the
pain of the early loss of Dave Adkins, but Triangle went from a
promising position at 130/2 to being bowled out for just 153. The
visitors overcame a late blip to win by a comfortable 6 wickets.
Grant
Neven's 2nd XI fared no better at Crewkerne, despite Bill
Gates
coming agonisingly close to a century, he was left on 99 not out at the
close as Triangle scored 189/8. In reply Briggs & Sparrow
shared a 102 run partnership for the 2nd wicket, but Michael Males
returned to the attack to take 5/43 to give Portland hope, but it
wasn't enough as the hosts eased to a 4 wicket win with nearly 8 overs
to spare. View
the scorecard here...
The Sunday 1st XI continued their winning run thanks to a 7 wicket haul
from spinner Scott Males, with skipper Chris Leak picking up another
half-century as they beat Bournemouth 2nds at Chapel Gate..
Stuart Sugg led his Sunday 2nds to their first win in a month with a
convincing 88-run defeat of Old Bournemouthians. Dave Adkins scored an
unbeaten 108 as Triangle notched up 232, though only after a massive
mid-order collapse where 4 wickets went down in one over. Opening
bowlers Michael Males and Jody Locke could only watch in dismay as
multiple catches were shelled off their bowling, until finally Grant
Neven held onto one to stop the bleeding. Once the breakthrough was
made, wickets tumbled and it was left to the spin twins Redfern (4/36)
and Stewkesbury (3/16) to finish the job. Read

In the evening league The George Inn wrapped up their season with a win
against Cosmos. Callan Laws was the star of the show with an unbeaten
hundred as he single-handledly chased down the target of 145. Read

The Saturday 1st XI eased their relegation fears with a
52-run win against fellow strugglers Bridport. Triangle
recovered from 22-3 as Simon Barrett (62) with Scott Males (21) and
Matt Gomm (33), hit another half century as they finished on 185. Jon
Dixon starred with the ball, taking 5-30, as 7 Bridport wickets fell
for just 19 runs as they collapsed spectacularly from a strong position
of 114/3. Read

Matt
Gomm's Saturday 1st XI have finally won and hauled themselves off the
bottom of Division 3 in the process. Following a torrid May,
the 1sts triumphed in the battle of the teams with a 100% losing record
in the division, overcoming Suttoners 2nds by 7 wickets.
No Saturday games last weekend due to the late spring rains, but on
Sunday both teams notched up victories.
In the evening league, Triangle crashed out of the Echo Cup at the 1st
round stage following a loss against the in-form Portland Arms at the
YOI jungle. Chasing 103, Triangle struggled to hit over the rough and
finished 20 runs adrift at the close, Simon Proffitt top-scoring with
25. Read

Matt Gomm's Saturday 1sts are still searching for their first win of
the season, this time going down by 56 runs away to Cerne Valley. Simon
Proffitt (5/63) gave the islanders some hope, but once again their
batting let them down, as despite getting starts no
batsman passed 30, with Chris Leak top-scoring with 29. Read
the report here...
Chris Leak's Sunday 1sts recorded their first win with a
convincing 144 run victory over Dewlish. Gary Randell (62) topped the
scoring, though Simon Proffitt was unlucky to be left unbeaten on 49 at
the end of the innings as Triangle ended on 246-7. Early wickets from
Chris Leak (1/19) and Matty Randell (2/29) put Triangle in control, and
when Gary removed the dangerous Steve Hiller, the result never looked
in doubt. Dewlish were bowled out for 132 with the returning
Sami
Rathnayake picking up the final 2 wickets. Read the report here...
Stuart Sugg's Sunday 2nds maintained their 100% record with a 99-run
win over Broadstone 2nds at The Delph. Asked to bat first, Triangle
were soon racking up the runs, thanks to some wayward bowling. After
Marc Nott departed, sharing an opening stand of 48 with Dave Males,
Scott then shared in a 100-run partnership with only 56 coming off the
bat. Sugg and Bill Trevett's assault at the end of the
innings saw them both reach their fifty in the final over and Triangle
finished
on 277-4. Richard Johnson's early wickets saw Broadstone slump to 3/2,
but Pete Russell led the fightback. His dismissal soon after reaching
fifty saw Broadstone collapse, before a mini-revival by Simmons (53)
saw the hosts eventually all out for 178. Read
the report here...
In the evening league Dave Price led PRT to their third win with a
dominant bowling performance against Marquis of Granby. Olly Whisker
(4/3) was the star with the ball, which included a hattrick as Marquis
were reduced to 43 all out. Whisker (3*) and Proffitt (23*) made short
work of the run chase, as Triangle cruised to the win in the 5th over. Read
the report here...
The George Inn fell to a 9 wicket loss to Cosmos at Redlands. Batting
first the George lost wickets steadily with only Matty Randell (15),
Richard Stewkesbury (14) and Lenny Hansford (10) reaching double
figures. In reply Cosmos only lost the wicket of Brian Keane (20)
bowled by Callan Laws as they reached the target with over 5 overs to
spare. Read
the report here...
The Saturday 1st XI continued their losing start to the season with a 4
wicket defeat at home to Bridport. Skipper Matt Gomm (20) and Jon Dixon
(40) added 61 to lead the Triangle recovery after slumping to 61/4 The
final total of 154 was not enough as Bridport reached it with nearly 10
overs to spare, despite a frugal 12 over spell from Dixon (2/20) and
wickets from Simon Proffitt (3/43). Matt Gomm was not happy
with the performance, "A few came out with a bit of credit but
there were also a
few that didn’t really perform. We’ve kept everything in-house but they
know I’m not overly
impressed." Read
the report here...
In the Evening League, Dave Price's Triangle made it 2 wins from 2 with
a 5 wicket win against the Portland Arms. Christian Brown proved the
star with the ball as he picked up 4 wickets for 13 as the Arms
collapsed to 54 all out. Openers Proffitt and Whisker both
top-scored with 13 as Triangle made hard work of the run chase,
eventually easing over the finish line thanks to Martin Weller scoring
a rapid 8 from 2 balls. Read the
report here...
The Saturday 1st XI's campaign got off to a poor start, losing by 5
wickets away
to Pavilion Sports at Spetisbury, more info when we get it.
Both Sunday games were washed out, but Triangle were back in action in
the evening league. Now in Division 2, Dave Price's men are looking to
bounce straight back up to the big time and got off to the perfect
start with victory over Cosmos. Olly Whisker (27*) kept his head as all
around them were losing theirs and carried his bat as Triangle chased
down 68 to win. Earlier Bill Gates was the pick of the bowling with
3-13, as all bowlers picked up wickets. Read the report here...

GIRLS CRICKET
In a joint venture between Portland Red Triangle, Weymouth C.C. and the Osprey Leisure Centre, Free Coaching is offered to all girls between 8-16. The sessions will begin on Monday 22nd February and run for 9 weeks every Monday between 4-5pm. This is a fantastic chance for girls who have played the game before or those wishing to take up the game to receive 1st class coaching from fully qualified E.C.B Coaches at no cost.
Portland Secretary Grant Neven is full of enthusiasm and, "Hopes that the joint venture could lead to the formation of a girls team to represent the area in competitive games and who knows maybe find future county and England players." He added, "In the past both ourselves and Weymouth have held girls only coaching sessions but never attracted sufficient numbers to form a team, by combining our resources and holding regular sessions both clubs hope that finally girls and ladies cricket will take off in the area."
Sean Fitzgerald of Weymouth added, "For too long girls and ladies cricket in the area has taken a back seat at most clubs, by our two clubs working together I hope that we will attract good numbers to the sessions and hopefully continue to provide joint sessions throughout the summer and beyond."
