WEYMOUTH AND DISTRICT EVENING CRICKET LEAGUE RULES

  1. The league shall be known as “The Weymouth and District Evening Cricket League”

  2. It shall be open to any club accepted by the Annual General Meeting Clubs not sending representatives or apologies to the AGM will not be accepted

  3. The officers namely President, Chairman, Secretary and Hon Treasurer shall form the management committee together with one representative from each Division

Registrations

  1. Players shall be registered by the league secretary when their name has appeared on a completed result card. Clubs may register as many players as they wish during the season provided they have not played for any other side unless transferred (Rule 6) or, where Rule 5 applies. Such players registering for two or more sides shall be suspended until the management committee shall decide the issue. A team playing a suspended player shall have two points deducted from their total, and the points at stake will be awarded to the opposite side.

  2. A club with teams competing in different divisions of the league may play members of the junior team in a senior team for two matches without losing their junior status. On playing a third game for a senior team, such a player automatically becomes a senior player. No player registered for a senior team may play in a junior team. An exception is made as in Rule 6.

  3. Application for transfer from one club and/or team to another must be made to the league secretary by the player, and the consent of both clubs obtained, except where deemed otherwise by the management committee.

Fees and Honours

  1. Each team shall pay £35 to the Hon. Treasurer before the end of April each season as entrance fee. School and Youth teams under the age of 18 years shall pay £17.50, on a 'no pay - no play' basis.

  2. The "Habgood Challenge Cup" shall be awarded to the winners of Division 1; the "Red Hackle Trophy" to the winners of Division 2 and the “Echo Trophy” shall be awarded to the winners of Division 3. The top 2 teams in Divisions 2 & 3 shall be promoted and the bottom 2 teams in Divisions 1 & 2 shall be relegated each season.

    The cups are held for one year, returnable by the 1st. of June and the holders are responsible for the cups while in charge of them. Mementos or prizes may be awarded to the winners and runners up each season at the discretion of the Management committee. No team joining the League for the first time, or rejoining after missing the previous season, shall be eligible for any prize monies until rejoining for the next season, when those monies will be paid.

  3. No club or member of that club shall be considered for an award if that club is in breach of any Competition rule.

  4. Clubs participating in the competitions organized by the league committee undertake to be responsible for the safekeeping of any perpetual trophy won by the club, or individual playing for the club, and accept responsibility for returning the trophy to a committee member at the prescribed time, or to pay for a replacement should the trophy be lost or damaged.

Conditions of Play

  1. Each match shall be on an overs basis, from 16 - 20 overs per innings, the actual number to be decided by the Captains before tossing the coin. In the event of a disagreement, 18 overs shall be played. Any match played in April or August shall consist of 16 overs per innings. The scorer, in association with the umpires, shall record the actual number of overs bowled. An interval of not more than 5 minutes is allowed between innings. FIVE OVERS SHALL BE THE MAXIMUM NUMBER TO BE BOWLED BY ANY ONE BOWLER. Fixtures must commence by 6.30pm but teams arriving later than 6.20pm automatically lose the toss for the choice of innings.

  2. The fixture list shall be compiled by the league secretary. Two points shall be awarded for a win and one for a tie. The first named club shall have choice of ground. The umpires shall have, without appeal from the captains, jointly to decide absolutely the fitness of the ground and weather, and to decide if the fixture shall be abandoned after the start. The winning side is required to send to the league secretary within four days of the fixture a properly completed result post card initialed by the opposing captain showing the innings total, teams and batting and bowling figures. If fully completed result cards are not received within one week of the completed fixture, points will be deducted from the wining side.

    No match shall be canceled without prior agreement of both teams and the league secretary unless due to bad weather. Postponed or abandoned matches shall be rearranged by the club secretaries who will notify the league secretary as soon as possible. Three dates will be offered by the home team to the opposing team for the rearranged fixture. In the final event, where it is not possible to agree a date, the league secretary is to be notified and the home team shall be awarded the points.

  3. Protests must be lodged with the league secretary within three days of the alleged offence, accompanied by a deposit of £5 which will be forfeited if the management committee consider the protest to be frivolous.

  4. Any club failing to fulfill the fixture without satisfactory explanation to the management committee shall lose the match by default.

  5. The management committee may postpone all fixtures on the day for inter-league matches.

  6. The same ball must be used throughout league or cup fixtures, except if lost or damaged, in which case a similar ball to that lost or damaged must be used. This will not apply to the cup final when one ball per innings shall be used.

  7. The bowlers "run-up" shall be no more than 12 yards. Where "run-ups" are not marked out by the groundsman prior to the match commencing, then it shall be the responsibility of the two captains to ensure that a suitable mark is in place before the match starts.

Echo Cup Competition

  1. The competition shall be called the "Echo Challenge Cup" and the trophy shall not become the property of any one club. The competition shall be annual and open to any club competing in the league. The entire control and management shall be vested in the management committee; and the above rules shall apply except as amended hereafter.

  2. The league secretary shall fix dates for the fixtures. The competition shall be run on a knock out basis with the final on a neutral ground or as directed by the management committee. In the event of bad weather stopping play after a match has started, it shall be replayed on the same ground. In the event of a tie, the team losing the least wickets shall be deemed the winner. In the case of replayed matches, only players who were eligible on the date of the original fixture are qualified to play.

  3. Any player playing in the "Echo Cup" must have played at least one league or cup game for the team that season before the "Echo Cup" semi-final.

  4. Teams drawn at home in the Echo Cup are responsible for paying for the ground. The away side will reimburse the home side for half of the cost of the ground - up to a maximum of half of the cost of a ground at Redlands. Payment is to be made before the start of the game.

General

  1. No amendments of these rules shall be made except at the Annual General Meeting

  2. Each club loyally binds itself to accept the decision of the management committee

  3. Except as provided above the MCC laws of cricket (1980 code) shall apply
