Match report

Tony Quayle's side were once again on their travels, this time pitching up in north Dorset for a meeting with Old Blandfordians. Luckily this week the team managed to arrive before play started, with Marc Nott replacing and absent Pete Laming, Simon Proffitt in for Olly Whisker and leg-spinner Adam Smart making his weekend debut in place of Bill Gates. Quayle duly lost the toss and was invited to have a bowl on a green pitch with clouds hanging overhead.

Openers Dan Strong and Tony Morris got proceedings underway, with Morris making the initial breakthrough bowling the opener in the 5th over. Both bowlers were unlucky not to take any further wickets despite beating the bat on numerous occasions as the conditions favoured them with a strong cross-wind, coupled with seam movement and low bounce.

Strong made way for Nott, who bowled a tidy spell from the top end, but he too found it difficult to break down the Blandfordians' defences. Morris finished an uncharacteristically economical 8-over spell, making way for off-spinner Gareth Redpole. Nott was then switched for Smart after completing his 8 overs, with immediate effect as Adam picked up a wicket in an erratic first over. This was a sign of things to come as Smart bamboozled the opposition with a mixed 3-over spell, bowling some unplayable deliveries to take 2 more wickets, but unfortunately these were accompanied by a plethora of wides and rank long-hops.

Quayle replaced Smart when his control deserted him completely, bringing on young Callan Laws, who took a wicket in his first over, thanks to a fine catch by the skipper. He followed this up by removing the dogged no. 3 with a superb swinging delivery as Blandfordians started to falter. At the other end Redpole was slowly but surely going about his business and picked up 4 wickets for himself for a spartan 16 runs, including the catch of the day, a left-handed take by Pete Tombs at square leg. Blandfordians were bowled out for 132 after a fine fielding performance by Triangle with not a single catch going down.

Triangle then got off to the worst possible start as Quayle's experiment of sending in Adam Smart to open backfired as he was soon back in the pavilion for 1. The skipper then saw his nephew hit a sweetly timed drive straight at mid-off, who was surprised as anyone that he held on to it. It was Quayle who perished next, playing an ill-advised sweep shot that he top-edged and was easily taken.

Tombs and Chris Pegrum were thus brought together and started the recovery with some sensible batting that saw the score start to tick along nicely. Pegrum then missed a straight full toss and had no arguments with the lbw decision as he departed for 16. Young Simon Proffitt promoted to 6 in the order, played out a masterclass in defensive batting, leaving Tombs to move the score along as Triangle got within 50 of the target.

Pete then was out to a stunning diving catch at point, as he attempted to cut a wide delivery and was out for 21. Redpole fell to a caught and bowled and Joel Maisey then quickly followed with another fine catch at silly mid-on as the Portland ship started to capsize. Laws was bowled playing a forward defensive along the wrong line and Strong departed soon after as 5 wickets fell for just 20 runs. Morris and Proffitt then steered Triangle to another batting point before Morris holed out to a fine catch on the boundary as the islanders fell an agonizing 21 runs short.
